Spring Break Workshop

The Spring Break Workshop is a great opportunity for your child to develop friendships, work on social skills, and improve gross and fine motor skills by playing sports, games, and doing art activities! The workshop will meet from 9:30 am to noon March 29 - 31 (Monday-Wednesday). Here is an idea of what each day will be like: We will begin the day by meeting on the playground (weather permitting). Children will have a chance to greet each other and play for a few minutes before starting the day’s structured activities. Once everyone has arrived, we will work on gross motor skills by playing a sport or a group game outside. Next, we will move to the classroom for a lesson and group discussion as well as a snack. The week’s theme is “How to Handle Difficult Situations” such as bullying, peer pressure, losing, low grades, disappointment, as well as managing stress and anxiety. I will teach the children how to problem-solve difficult situations, as well as identify and manage stress and anxiety using a 5-point stress scale, social stories, role playing, and more. In addition, I will help the children practice these problem-solving skills and stress-relieving techniques throughout the rest of the day during our other activities. The children will then have the opportunity to pick one of several activities, all of which are cooperative and work on fine motor skills. Example: A “lego center” with the instructions “Build an airport, castle, or space station.” Children will have to decide what to build and then work together to build it. Another center might include poster paper and markers, and the children will be instructed to make a mural of their common interests (thus, they have to discover what they have in common). Following the center activities, we will play games - one day, it might be an active game that works on speech skills and following directions; another day we might go back outside to play a new sport or group game. Next we will work on conversation skills while eating lunch together, and finally, the day will end with a few minutes of “free play” for those who have earned it. Pickup will be on the playground, weather permitting.
